It was a great day to support pro bono work in Hillsborough County Saturday at the Hillsborough County Bar Association’s 5K Pro Bono River Run and Judicial Pig Roast. James Hoyer Law Firm attorneys Jesse Hoyer and Sean Estes, along with paralegal Jan Brown, turned out for the event, dressed as super heroes to take on the challenge.

Jan Brown is the Pro Bono Chair for the Tampa Bay Paralegal Association, whose theme was “Paralegal Power.” TBPA’s booth with a looming Spiderman took 2nd place in the Best Pig Sty competition. Jesse Hoyer placed 3rd in the 5K run in her age group.

The event’s main purpose is to promote and support pro bono legal services in Hillsborough County. Local judges, attorneys, law students, and paralegals participate by pledging pro bono hours and/or contributing to pro bono projects.

It was a proud moment for the James Hoyer Law Firm as paralegal Jan Brown was named the very 1st recipient of the Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Paralegal Award in Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit.  Jan graciously accepted the award at a ceremony at the Chester Ferguson Law Center in Tampa, on April 24th, 2014. (See video and pictures below)

“I’m very passionate about pro bono work, because I think it’s important to give back to the community,” Jan said. “There are so many people in need of legal services who can’t afford them, so we all need to do our part.”

Jan was honored for providing more than 125 hours of pro bono work on various projects ranging from the Wills for Heroes program to cases on child custody, student loan debt, and foreclosure.

Attorney Nancy Lugo, Bay Area Legal Services Pro Bono Manager, presented Jan with the award.  Nancy praised Jan for selflessly dedicating herself, not only to pro bono clients in need, but also to organizations that provide pro bono service to the indigent, including Bay Area Legal Services, the Bay Area Volunteer Lawyers Program, and the Hillsborough County Bar Association.

Jan has served as the Pro Bono Chair for the Tampa Bay Paralegal Association for the past three years.  She is also on the Association’s Board of Directors and was its 2012-2013 Vice President.  In her role there, she has tirelessly encouraged other paralegals to join in the spirit of giving pro bono time.

Jan continued to champion the cause, in her charming and infectious way, as she accepted the award, saying,  “I warn everybody to be careful, because pro bono, volunteer work can be addictive, and you may never quit!”  Please join us in congratulating Jan for his honor.

We would also  like to congratulate James Hoyer Attorney Jillian Estes for being recognized at this year’s ceremony, as a Hillsborough County Attorney who has provided more than 20 hours of pro bono service.  In 2012, Jillian was the recipient of the Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Young Lawyer Award in Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit.

Florida Bar Profiles James Hoyer Associate for Pro Bono Service

James Hoyer Associate Jillian Estes with Daniela.

James Hoyer Associate Jillian Estes is making an impact with her pro bono work. The Florida Bar’s Young Lawyers Division  profiled Estes’ successful work for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.  She volunteered to represent a father from Denmark, whose year 8-year-old daughter was being improperly detained in Tampa.

Here is an excerpt from the Florida Bar article:

For Tampa young lawyer Jillian Estes, the call she received in her office would have caused any parent’s heart to stop.

The caller, a psychologist from Denmark, said his 8-year-old daughter, Daniela, was being illegally held by her mother in Tampa. Daniela had been to visit her mom for a summer vacation, he said. Now her mom refused to let her return home.

It was a call that Estes is trained to handle.

James Hoyer Associate Receives Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award

With family and friends looking on proudly, James Hoyer Law Firm Associate Jillian Estes was honored with this year’s Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Young Lawyer Award in Florida’s Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. Jillian accepted the award on April 26th, 2012 at the Chester Ferguson Law Center in Tampa.

“I want to (say) thank you very much to the committee for this honor. It’s very humbling to say the least,” Jillian said as she addressed the crowd after accepting the award from Judge James Barton, but one very special guest couldn’t hold back his excitement at that very moment.  Jillian’s 22-month old son Kingston beamed and called out “Ma Ma,” just after Jillian began to speak. James Hoyer Attorney Wins Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award

Jillian Estes - Associate

Congratulations to James Hoyer Law Firm Associate Jillian Estes.  She is the winner of this year’s Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Young Lawyer Award  in Florida’s Thirteenth Judicial Circuit.

Jillian successfully represented a father from Denmark in a parental abduction case involving his eight year old daughter. The child was wrongfully retained in Florida in violation of the Hague Convention, an international treaty which requires that children must be returned to their home country to settle custody disputes.  Father and daughter were  reunited and have now returned to Denmark.

The father wrote in support of Jillian, “I think Jill Estes should receive the award not only based on her legal skills and professionalism, but indeed also for the dedication and for her empathic and warm qualities which helped me through this whole ordeal.”

Before going to law school, Jillian worked in the International Division of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Virginia.  “I’m incredibly honored to be recognized for this work which is very near and dear to my heart. It was working with the families of abducted children that inspired me to go to law school, and now, it is my privilege to give back and help when I can.”

Jillian was commended by Pro Bono Committee Chair Judge Ashley Moody who said, “Your outstanding commitment to pro bono service is an inspiration to all attorneys.”  Jillian will be recognized by the judges of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit at the Annual Pro Bono Awards Ceremony in April.  Please join us in congratulating Jillian.
