During the summer and fall of 2005, Hurricanes Rita and Katrina slammed the Gulf states of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Thousands of people lost their homes or jobs from the devastation. In an effort to ease the burden of recovery, many lenders, including Countrywide, allowed mortgage customers to defer at least three months of payments. They wouldn’t have to pay the deferred money back until the end of the mortgage term, Countrywide told customers, and no interest would be charged.

Within a few months, however, Countrywide broke its promises. Deferred payment clients were ordered to pay back the money immediately or agree to a bigger loan balance to be paid off with interest over the term of the mortgage. Many clients, overcome with the devastation and debt, are facing foreclosure proceedings.
