Toughman Lawsuits
On September 22, 2003, we filed a lawsuit in state court in Tampa on behalf of the estate of Stacy Young, the Bradenton wife and mother who died following her participation in a Toughman event in Sarasota in June. The lawsuit alleges negligence causing the wrongful death of Mrs. Young at the age of 30. She believed the boxing match would be safe and fun. In reality, the lawsuit contends, the Toughman operators conducted a "barbaric, vicious, unregulated, bloody slugfest." The operators failed to warn participants of the multiple deaths that have occurred in these events, failed to provide proper headgear, and failed to staff the events in a safe manner, the lawsuit states. The same day, we also filed a lawsuit on behalf of 30-year-old Tony Roten of Sarasota, who was seriously injured in another Toughman match the same night as Mrs. Young.

"Had our clients known what they faced, they never would have stepped into the ring," said Greg Kehoe, the lead attorney in the litigation. "Toughman operators had plenty of horrific experience of dangers these matches posed, yet they failed to warn Mrs. Young and Mr. Roten." Named as defendants in the suits were American Boxing & Athletic Association Inc., AdoreAble Promotions Inc., Arthur P. Dore, Raymond Blackburn and The Sarasota County Agricultural Fair Association Inc.
