Position: Senior Partner

As a former federal prosecutor and more than 30 years of trial law experience, Terry Smiljanich has a talent for representing fraud victims and consumers who have been denied their rights. He has defended persons charged with professional malpractice, including lawyers, architects, engineers, accountants and doctors. He has also represented people injured in accidents and victims of insurance company scams.

At James, Hoyer, Newcomer, Smiljanich & Yanchunis, Terry serves as lead class counsel on many nationwide class action cases, including several against companies violating the privacy rights of citizens.

Early in his career, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, prosecuting organized crime, environmental pollution, kidnappings, bank robberies, and other matters. Before that, he served as a law clerk to Federal District Judge Ben Krentzman in Tampa, Fla. Terry was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserves and achieved the rank of captain. In 1987, Terry served as counsel to the United States Senate in connection with the 1987 Senate hearings concerning the Iran/Contra controversy, where his primary areas of responsibility were the State Department and the White House.

In the early nineties, Terry connected with former federal prosecutors and friends Bill James, Chris and Judy Hoyer, and fellow attorney John Newcomer to join James, Hoyer, Newcomer & Smiljanich.

Terry earned his undergraduate degree and J.D. from the University of Florida, where he graduated with high honors. In law school, he was an editor of the University of Florida Law Review and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Levin College of Law.

Terry spends his leisure time volunteering as chairman of the Tampa Bay Skeptics, a non-profit scientific organization devoted to the exposure of pseudoscientific fraud. He is also active in fundraising efforts for the University of Florida. Terry and his wife live in Tampa.
