Bill James 1932-2008
\Bill James\ Position: Senior Partner

After serving eight years as Hillsborough County State Attorney and fighting corporate corruption, Bill James founded James, Hoyer, Newcomer, Smiljanich & Yanchunis with his good friends and colleagues Chris and Judy Hoyer and John Newcomer in 1993. Since its inception, the firm has been actively engaged in complex fraud litigation on behalf of government agencies, groups of individuals and whistleblowers nationwide.

After graduating from law school in 1957, Bill began his career as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Missouri. Following that, Bill joined the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and served as a Special Agent from 1961-1964. In 1970, Bill became chief assistant U.S. attorney for the Tampa Division in the Middle District of Florida. In 1978, Bill worked as a trial attorney on Tampa’s organized crime strike force.

After a strong campaign with Chris Hoyer as his manager, Bill James was elected to serve as Hillsborough County State Attorney in 1985, where he served for the next eight years. Under Bill’s leadership, the office was elevated from worst to first in the state of Florida. His career as a crusader against corruption included the prosecution of three Hillsborough County commissioners.

Bill served as commissioner of the Justice Administrative Commission from 1985-1992. He also served as Secretary, Treasurer of the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association, and as a committee member of the Florida Standard Jury Instructions in Criminal Cases from 1985-1993.

Bill received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State College (A.B., 1955) and received his law degree from Washington University (J.D., 1957) in St. Louis.
