Practice Areas: Fraud; Class Actions; False Claims

Position: Senior Partner

Education: University of Florida (B.S. in Business Administration, 1969); Florida State University (J.D., with honors, 1972).

Experience: In nearly 30 years of civil law practice, John Newcomer has always represented the plaintiff or victim in a case. In doing so, he has stuck to the principle that at its core, filing lawsuits is about seeking change for the better. This ideal has motivated John since he worked his way through law school at Florida State, while holding down jobs with the Florida Attorney General's Office and the Florida Cabinet. After graduation he entered the Tampa firm of Yado & Keel, and handled a wide variety of litigation, including personal injury, family and appellate law. Within five years he became that firm's managing partner, and oversaw its growth from five attorneys to sixteen.

In 1993 John joined with Chris and Judy Hoyer and Bill James to found James, Hoyer & Newcomer. He has prosecuted class-actions and individual suits in state and federal courts across the U.S. At present John heads up the firm's mass tort practice, representing victims of defective medical and cosmetic products. Still the managing partner of his firm, John has supervised the growth of James, Hoyer from four attorneys to twenty, who work alongside eight investigators.

John is a lifelong resident of Tampa and a graduate of H.B. Plant High School. He formerly held the rank of captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. He is married to Pat Newcomer, who is the manager of benefits for Hillsborough County's government. They have two grown sons. John is an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and a passionate golfer.

Memberships: Admitted to bar, 1972, Florida and U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida; 1978, U.S. Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit; 1981, U.S. Court of Appeals, 11th Circuit. Member, Arbitration Panel, U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, 1995 — present. Hillsborough County Bar Association (Member, Elder Law Section, 1992-1993); The Florida Bar (Member, Grievance Committee, 1997 — 2000 ); President's Club, The Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, 1991; National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, 1992.
